Paddy Clark NZ Flyfishing is able to offer a great variety of fishing trips and can combine the anglers individual skills, experience and time frame to craft an unforgettable fishing adventure.
The following is an outline of trips available.
1. Day fishing trips from Taupo - anglers are picked up from their Taupo accommodation , driven by 4wd to a stream which best fits the anglers experience and offers the very best current fishing conditions. Waters fished are primarily back country streams. Personalised instruction in local fly fishing techniques is readily and cheerfully given by your guide. Maximum of 2 anglers per guide. Streamside lunches are provided within the package and for those anglers travelling light and not bringing along their own fishing gear , all tackle can also be available. Day trips are all different and can cater for the most experienced angler to the very beginner.
Day trips ex Taupo are very popular with travellers who are perhaps passing through the region on a general tourist holiday and fancy a days flyfishing in one of NZ”s superb back country streams The fishing break perhaps allows a travelling couple to unwind, stay a night or two in Taupo, do some shopping see the local sights and take the opportunity to enjoy the pleasantness of a small modern NZ town without rushing. There is plenty of things to do in Taupo for a non angling travelling partner.
2. Wilderness flyfishing trips via helicopter - Helicopter access to wilderness rivers can be arranged for the more experienced angler. Most trips comprise a drive to helicopter base nearest to chosen stream to minimise flying costs . Most heli trips are day trips so as to allow different beats to be fished each day and the anglers can enjoy all the luxuries which Taupo has to offer each evening.
Some waters require prior notice of intention to fish but most can be arranged the day before . For new anglers to NZ it is advisable to do a few days back country fishing before making a wilderness trip. Your guide will be happy to discuss all aspects with you and help you select a suitable river and organise the flight - no problem we do it all the time. Some wilderness waters can be suitable for a non fishing partner to accompany the angler and guide and share in the thrill of the helicopter flight and the wonderful scenery offered by the flight and the eventual fishing location .
3. Back country camp outs. All camping gear can be provided. All provisions are bought specifically for the trip and are cooked on site. Camp outs can be wilderness camping in a tent or a more frequently utilised option is to make use of a simple one room streamside cabin. All tent campouts include a helicopter trip and many of the hut camps also require helicopter access however there is also a limited number of huts on private land which can be accessed by 4wd .
4. “Soft Campouts” . By far the most popular flyfishing trip of all. Max of 2 anglers. Two options available , Hotel CA and Hotel Whio. Both entail a lovely scenic 2 hour drive out of Taupo . All of the fisherman’s travelling baggage can be brought along as well , as long as it can fit in the one ton ute!
Accommodation is a very comfortable back country cottage , sparsely furnished but with all the mod cons including hot showers and ice for your whisky. Private , separate bedroom with comfortable beds.
Hotel Whio is in a very remote bush location and sited at stream side and suits a more active angler. Travelling to Hotel Whio can be quite an adventure and once the end of the road is reached all gear is transferred to smaller more manoeuvrable jeeps for the final bush trek deep into the NZ forest to rivers edge. The setting is truly beautiful and the remoteness complete. A three day , two night trip is a minimum and general duration but an additional days fishing can be added with still a fresh fishing beat each day.
Hotel California is by far the most popular campout option ..It is merely an ex shepherds cottage nestled into a private forest. The accommodation has everything an angler could wish for - all the mod cons from hot showers to refrigerators to outside couches ideal for relaxing and after fishing drinks and a cigar. Even a handy lemon tree for the gin! There is an excellent back country stream boundering some 5 kilometres of the property. In addition there is excellent varied waters all within an hours drive from Hotel CA with many of these waters only accessed across private land by 4wd. There is also an available helicopter operation based close by and the fishing options are huge and anglers can fish fresh beats each day for weeks if they wish.
Minimum stay at Hotel CA is 2 nights for 2 anglers but several of my clients prefer to stay there for a week or so.
(See video on home page which was shot by my daughter and shows Hotel CA and it’s boundary back country stream. Unfortunately the river was just recovering from a heavy fresh and we didn’t have the option to wait for a day to allow it to clear , so shot the film . Lots of the other web site photos were taken close to Hotel CA )
Paddy Clark NZ flyfishing runs a very flexible fishing operation and we can put together any sort of flyfishing package to suit you. The above give you some idea what is available. A fishing package can be modified as the trip progresses to take advantage of many outside factors which might arise.
